As entrepreneurs it's easy for us to get buried by our to-do lists. Because we learn as we go, and the list of things we need to learn never seems to end, we get stuck in a constant struggle between what we want to do, and what we think we need to do to be successful.
Enter the systems to help us do more in less time.
Enter the courses to help us increase conversions and build 7-figure businesses with less work.
And on to our to-do lists go a mountain of tasks we're led to believe will help make us successful right now.
So we head down the rabbit holes not because we want to, but because we're told we need to. And we go so far down that our reasons for starting our business in the first place appear as if we're looking through a pin hole, struggling to see the light that's shining on the other side. And the longer and further we go, the dimmer the light becomes, until one day we question why we got into business in the first place.
I've been there. I've been there a few times. Quite frankly it really, really sucks.
The first step to getting back out is taking a look around and realizing, “Shit, I'm in a pretty deep hole here. This sucks! I want to get out!”
Once you take a step back, perhaps take a deep breath, you can see the world around you for what it is – a sticking point you've arrived at.
But before asking, “How do I get out of the hole?”, I've found it important to ask, “Why did I start my business in the first place?”
Once you reconnect with your “why”, then the solutions to get unstuck can begin to reveal themselves. And once you're unstuck, the real work can begin.
So the steps are:
- Realize you've hit a sticking point
- Reconnect with your why
- While firmly in your “why” look for solutions to become unstuck
- Implement one (or more if need be) of those solutions
Now what does this have to do with the title of this post – living into your future self? Everything!
When we start our businesses we have a powerful why – we want to build an awesome product, we want to build a company where people love to come to work and have an awesome work/life balance, we want to change the world!
And when do we want it? Right now!
It's that right now part that trips us up.
In a recent conversation a fellow coach told me the following. She said, and I paraphrase, that when we are inspired to create something that is our future self calling. At the moment the inspiration hits us we don't necessarily have the tools, systems, and people in place to make our dream a reality. It's something we move toward!
Let me repeat that – at the present moment we do not have the tools, systems, skills or people in place to make our dream a reality. The key is at the present moment.
But we're inspired! Sometimes we're so inspired we leave a cushy job or completely change the direction of our lives. And we begin to create.
I get very excited about new ideas and new projects I want to create. Many times I've dove in head first and after swimming furiously I banged my head on the bottom.
It's taken a lot of time for me to realize that my dreams aren't the reason for me hitting a wall – I am not dreaming too big. Rather I need people in my life to slow me down, to help flesh out and nurture the ideas I have so that together, we can breathe life into my dreams.
It is only in this way that I can live into my future self, and achieve the great things that I have been called to do.
That takes discipline. That takes help. That takes a level of vulnerability, honesty and openness that many of us aren't aren't accustomed to.
But I can promise you that, with the right people supporting you, your vulnerability, honesty and openness are not the blocks to progress we've all been led to believe, instead they are the doors through which we can pass, to achieve the greatness that is our true calling.
